Preacher: Fr. Paul
This Sunday’s Gospel reading takes us into Gentile territory, the region of Tyre. Jesus meets a woman who begs healing for her daughter and insists even when Jesus is rude to her.

Preacher: The Revd. Robert Lawson This Sunday we return to our readings from St. Mark’s Gospel after readings from St. John. We are plunged straight into controversy and argument. Jesus is criticised for not keeping cleanliness laws (even though they seem like common-sense). He reminds his hearers that it is from within us that come the evil intentions that defile us. Morning and Evening Prayer will not be said regularly in St. John’s during the next two weeks.
There will be alterations to the schedule for evening prayer from the beginning of September. Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.
This Sunday we conclude the series of readings from the Bread of Life passage in John 6. Jesus’ words scandalised even his disciples: “When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’” When Jesus asked the twelve if they too would leave him Peter responded, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.” St. John's will be open for Heritage Week. The theme is “Treasures of St. John’s”.
Opening times as follows: Thursday 23rd: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday 24th: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday 25th: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday 26th: noon - 4 p.m. No charge for entry. www.heritageweek.ie Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.
We continue the “Bread of Life” passage from St. John’s Gospel. (John 6:51 - 58). The bridge between this week’s reading and last Sunday’s is v. 51, “Jesus said to the crowd: ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I give for the life of the world is my flesh.’” The crowd argue amongst themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.
This Sunday the Gospel reading continues the “Bread of Life” teaching from St. John chapter 6. It is coupled with the story of Elijah being fed in the wilderness on his journey to Horeb, the mount of God. Jesus said, “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.” |
