Jesus has now arrived in Jerusalem, “the Way” is reaching its conclusion. One of the scribes asks Jesus, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus replies, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’”

A few weeks ago we read in Mark chapter 9 that the disciples were arguing amongst themselves about who was the greatest amongst them. This week we hear James and John, the sons of Zebedee, ask Jesus: “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Mk 10:37. The disciples are apparently slow to catch on to Jesus' message. Perhaps Mark repeats and repeats the point because we, too, are slow to catch on. We need constantly reminding that to be a disciple means being a servant. Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.
As we come to the end of our continuous readings of St. Mark’s Gospel we are confronted with the demand of discipleship. “Jesus, looking at [the young man] loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell all that you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’” Mark 10: 21 From the beginning of November the Eucharist will be celebrated at St. John’s on Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m.
The first celebration will be on Wednesday 7th November Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.
followed by a “Bring and Share” lunch. Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done great things! Do not fear, you animals of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit, the fig tree and vine give their full yield. Joel 2:21f |
