Wednesday 10th May - Holy Communion 11.00am in the Lady Chapel
Sunday 14th May - the 6th Sunday of Easter Solemn Eucharist 11.00am St John’s will celebrate its Patronal Festival of St John the Evangelist before the Latin Gate, at a Solemn Eucharist on Sunday 7th May at 11am. All welcome.
St John’s witnessed some very moving ceremonies during Holy Week, beginning on Palm Sunday with the blessing of palms and a procession around the church.
Fr Robert presided at the Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist, followed by placing of the Reserved sacrament on the altar of repose and the stripping of the Altar. The Watch continued until midnight, giving worshippers an opportunity for personal, and contemplative prayer. Good Friday ceremonies, in an austerely bare church, began with an hour of silent reflection. Those who wished, could have their private confessions heard by Fr Robert. As more worshippers arrived, Fr Robert led the congregation in prayer following the beautiful art-deco Stations of the Cross, the work of French sculptor Roger de Villiers, gifted to St John’s around 1935 by the renowned stained glass artist Evie Hone. Veneration of the Cross and the Liturgy of Good Friday completed the day’s poignant recalling of Christ’s suffering and death. A joyful congregation celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday at the Festival Sung Eucharist. During the celebration the Pascal Candle was marked and blessed and the congregation joined in the renewal of baptismal vows. St John’s was beautifully decorated with many garden flowers by organist and Trustee Eoghan Ward, ably assisted by his young sons Rupert and Felix, and by Altar Server Shabnam Vasisht and Chair of the Trustees and Sacristan Nicola Benson. Great quantities of chocolates were consumed afterwards at the coffee table! Thursday 6th April: Maundy Thursday 8.00pm Holy Eucharist followed by Stripping of the Altar and the Watch of Prayer until midnight Friday 7th April: Good Friday 12 noon - 3pm 12 noon : One hour of silent reflection. Sunday 9th April: Easter Day 11.00am Festival Sung Eucharist The congregation of St John’s gave a warm welcome to their new Chaplain, the Revd Canon Robert Jones, on February 20th at a special service. Fr Robert was introduced by the Most Reverend Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin, who expressed his pleasure in welcoming the new Chaplain to a church that occupied a special place in the life of the Church of Ireland. The sermon was given by the Very Revd Roderick Smyth, formerly Dean of Killaloe, who drew parallels between the new season of Spring and a new season beginning in St John’s which also affirmed a continuing ministry that had witnessed a long list of distinguished people who had served in Sandymount. Fr Robert was appointed following the recent retirement of Fr Paul Barlow. He served most recently in the Kiltegan Group of Parishes in the Dioceses of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. A Carlow man by birth, he trained for the ministry at Chichester Theological College and Trinity College Dublin. He was ordained in 1980 and was curate of Seapatrick Parish, Banbridge, and Bangor Abbey before being appointed rector of Rathfriland and Ballyward in Co Down. He later moved from the diocese of Down and Dromore to the diocese of Connor where he served in the parish of Finaghy and the parish of Cairncastle with All Saints Craigy Hill. In 1998, Fr Robert moved to Athlone and the diocese of Meath and Kildare and, four years later, was appointed Dean of Clonmacnoise and rector of the Trim Cathedral group of parishes. He returned to Connor diocese in 2012 when he became rector of Malone parish, Belfast. Dean Smyth, in his address, commended Fr Robert to the congregation, emphasising his particular gifts as liturgist, theologian, preacher, administrator, and as a caring and hard-working pastor with a sense of humour and he encouraged the people of St John’s to be kind to their new priest and trust him. He highlighted the uniqueness of St John’s, being, as it is, one of the very few Anglican Catholic churches in Ireland with a significant emphasis on liturgy and worship performed in order to maintain the beauty of holiness. The service was followed by a reception at which members and friends greeted their new Chaplain. Fr Robert presided at his first Sung Eucharist at St John’s on Ash Wednesday, with the imposition of ashes. The Trustees of the Church of St John the Evangelist are pleased to announce the appointment of the Revd Canon Robert Jones to the role of Chaplain, following the recent retirement of the Revd Dr Paul Barlow. Fr Robert will be introduced at St John’s by the Most Reverend Dr Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin, on Monday 20th February 2023 at 7.00pm. All are welcome to attend.
