‘The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things... If we live by the spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.’ (Gal. 5. 22,23,25)

Jesus crosses the lake to the country of the Gerasenes opposite Galilee. He is met by a man possessed by a legion of demons. Who is unable to live a normal, life and is as good as dead, living in the tombs. Jesus casts out the demons and they enter a herd of pigs. As a symbol of the destructiveness of the demons the pigs rush down the bank into the lake where they are drowned.

The man is returned to his right mind and is able to sit, unrestrained, with Jesus.

Our Old Testament and Gospel readings this Sunday focus on repentance and forgiveness. Nathan confronts David over his affair with Bathsheba - he has had her husband, Uriah the Hittite, killed and taken her to be his wife.

As he is at table in Simon’s house a woman ‘who was a sinner’ comes to Jesus and anoints his feet. Jesus tells her, and the dinner party, that she has been forgiven, hence the great love she shows to him.

Sung Eucharist 11 a.m.

The reading from the first book of Kings and the Gospel reading are linked by a common theme. Elijah prays to God to restore to life the only son of the woman of Zarephath. Jesus enters Nain and encounters a funeral procession. The dead man is a widow’s only son. He commands the young man to rise and he sat up on the funeral bier and began to speak.
