Sunday 3rd June - Trinity Sunday

Trinitarian belief is the mark of the Christian faith. We celebrate God: three persons in unity. Once we begin to explain and dissect we tie ourselves in knots. Belief in the Trinity grew from experience of God.

The reading from the Prophet Isaiah describes Isaiah's experience of meeting God in the Temple, high and lofty. The one who is thrice holy.

The Easter season ends with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. The story from Acts tells of the disciples being understood by people from all nations who were gathered in Jerusalem. In John's Gospel Jesus breathes the Holy spirit onto teh disciples - it is his life breath.

The Holy Spirit makes Jesus present in the world in his body, the Church; Pentecost is seen as the birth of  the Church.

This Sunday, between Ascension Day and Pentecost, looks forward to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. Jesus’ Ascension crowns the resurrection, but the work of Easter is not yet complete.
In the Gospel reading we hear Jesus’ prayer to the Father for his disciples from the farewell discourses at the Last supper in John 17.

“God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of the ram’s horn.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our king, sing praises.”

Ps 47: 5,6

“You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”
