This Sunday’s Gospel reading is the third story associated with the Epiphany. Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding at Cana in Galilee. St. John’s Gospel tells us this is the ‘first of his signs’, the signs that point to Jesus’ identity. Jesus ‘proclaimed the new creation at the wedding feast’ is how the church has seen it. Six stone water-jars each holding twenty or thirty gallons: that’s a lot of wine!
